Specialty retailers can expect to see new takes on peanut butter, protein-packed jerky and smoke in unexpected places in new product offerings this year, according to a panel of trendspotters who made their predictions after combing the aisles at the Summer Fancy Food Show earlier this month.The following are the top five trends from the show:

Retailer Relay Foods Plans Expansion in Virginia
Relay Foods will expand its corporate headquarters and Charlottesville, Va., fulfillment center to accommodate increased local demand for its products and to support the company’s entry into new markets, including those beyond Virginia.
The company, a leading online grocery store and farmers’ market, will invest more than $735,000, create 25 new jobs and increase its mid-Atlantic sales of Virginia-sourced meats, produce, dairy products, and value-added foods by $3 million over the next three years.
The Commonwealth of Virginia is partnering with Charlottesville and Relay Foods on this project through the governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund (AFID).

Hong Kong Houseware Fair a Big Draw
The Hong Kong Houseware Fair, Asia’s largest housewares event, organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and held at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Center, drew more than 28,000 visitors to its show held in April.
More than half the attendees – 51 percent – were from outside of Hong Kong: 67 percent from Asia, 15 percent from Europe and 7 percent from North America, with the remainder coming to the fair from Australia, Central and South America, Africa and the Middle East.

The gluten-free products market is projected to reach $6.839 billion by 2019, according to a research report by MarketsandMarkets.
