New York Tabletop Market Seminar to Feature Antiques Roadshow Appraiser

Nicholas M. Dawes, who for the past 20 years since Antiques Roadshow first aired on PBS has been one of the show’s popular appraisers, specializing in china, glass, silver and decorative objects, headlines the annual breakfast seminar during The New York Tabletop Market.

Dawes will appear April 13, when Forty One Madison hosts the buffet breakfast from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. in The Café on Level A.  As part of his presentation, Dawes will conduct on-the-spot appraisals for guests who bring their own small tabletop treasures.

“Who doesn’t wonder what happens behind the scenes of Antiques Roadshow? How are the collectors and their possessions chosen for feature and how do the experts, like Nick, so quickly dig up the historic credentials and assessments,” said Laurie Burns, director and senior vice president of Forty One Madison.

“We’re incredibly fortunate and proud to have someone of Nick’s stature and experience to bring us this insider view of such a beloved broadcast icon. Nick also will draw from his own personal background in retail to provide some valuable insight for our industry audience on selling heirlooms – and future heirlooms – and mastering merchandising showmanship. So it promises to be a fun yet valuable session.”

Dawes is a former antiques dealer and, in addition to his appearances on Roadshow, he is vice president of special collections for New York -based Heritage Auctions. A former Sotheby’s auctioneer, he is considered the country’s foremost expert on the work of Rene Lalique. The England native also serves as adjunct professor at Parsons, the New York School of Design, has authored several books on the decorative arts as well as articles for leading industry journals, and is called on frequently to lecture on the subject.

Seating for this program is limited and registration is recommended at www.41madison.com, where additional information on the April 12 to 15 New York Tabletop Market also is available.
