Le  Gruyère AOP Again Named Best Cheese in the World

Pringy, Switzerland (Sept. 22, 2025)— Swiss-made Le Gruyère AOP has done it again — it's been declared the best cheese in the world, taking first prize at the prestigious Mondial du Fromage in Tours, France.

The winning wheel was crafted by cheesemaker Simon Miguet and produced in the Neuchâtel canton.

Selected from nearly 1,900 entries worldwide, Miguet’s Le Gruyère AOP stood out for its exceptional flavor profile and craftsmanship. The winning wheel was a 12-month-aged Gruyère AOP, described by Miguet as having “a slight salty nuance, with salt crystals just beginning to form, and a rich, intense aroma,” according to coverage of the event.

For the 34-year-old cheesemaker, who took over his family dairy only two years ago, the award represents the culmination of painstaking daily work. “There are no magic secrets, especially when working with raw milk,” Miguet told Gazeta Express. “It requires constant monitoring of cleaning, care, moving the cheeses, and changing the boards. It’s work every day, seven days a week, 356 days a year.”

The title comes at a time when tariffs imposed by the United States are impacting producers worldwide; it once again underscores the importance of terroir, geography and artisanship in the art of making food.

Made exclusively from raw cow’s milk and aged with care in its famous caves, Le Gruyère AOP has remained an icon since the 12th century.

Denis Kaser of the Interprofessional du Gruyère said, "It is deeply gratifying to see Le Gruyère AOP honored once more as the world’s best. This award reflects the devotion of our artisan producers and affineurs, whose skill and passion sustain a tradition dating back to 1115."
