Atlanta, GA — January 16, 2026— GC Buying Group kicked off 2026 by bringing nearly 100 vendor partners and over 200 independent retail buyers together for two days focused on what actually grows a store: better merchandising, smarter vendor partnerships, and the kind of education that works in the real world.
The Power of the Independent: Start the Year Member Conference, held January 14-15 during Atlanta Winter Market, featured the largest vendor showcase in GC history and delivered what members consistently say they need most: actionable ideas, early access to programs and products, and peer relationships that make running an independent store more manageable and more profitable.
Now in its 45th year, GC has built its reputation on a straightforward model: independent retailers win when they have access to better vendor programs, practical education, and a community that understands the realities of their business.
Education Built for Independent Retail
GC's approach to education is simple, practical ideas that store owners and managers can implement with limited time and staff.
This year's Education Day featured two nationally recognized retail strategists. Lyn Falk, Owner and President of Retailworks, Inc., led sessions on storytelling, visual merchandising, and creating in-store experiences that drive engagement and sales. Angel Cicerone, President of Tenant Mentorship and retail consultant, delivered the keynote on building community as a competitive advantage.
"Lyn Falk's presentations on store design and display got our whole team charged up to go walk our store, reset our windows, and charge into the year with fun, joy, and imagination," said Laura Havlek of Sign of the Bear.
Members reported that the sessions delivered exactly what they came for: ideas they could act on immediately.
Vendor Partnerships That Support Real Growth
The vendor showcase brought nearly 100 partners together with store decision-makers, offering early visibility into new products, show specials, and program opportunities designed to improve margin and sell-through.
But the real value goes beyond the deals. GC members consistently report that the access and alignment they gain at the conference make the rest of the year easier. Questions get answered faster. Programs are easier to navigate. Vendor partners benefit from direct feedback and stronger relationships with the stores that matter most to their business.
"I loved having everyone in the room. Seeing colleagues who have parallel struggles and triumphs. Seeing vendors who have been so important to my success. Meeting new vendors, learning, and teaching. ALL of it," said Michelle Dietz of Wisconsin Cutlery and Kitchen Supply.
Eight vendor partners sponsored breakout education sessions, providing deeper insight into product positioning, merchandising strategy, and what's new for 2026: Hestan, HIC, Made In, Terrapin Ridge, USA Pan, Vitamix, Wüsthof, and Zwilling.
Celebrating 45 Years and New Leadership
A highlight of this year's conference was a member reception celebrating Janis Johnson, GC's founder and longtime president, and welcoming Doug Huemoeller as the new owner of GC Buying Group. Under Johnson's leadership, GC became the leading buying group in the kitchenware industry, built on trust, long-term relationships, and a commitment to helping independent retailers compete and win.
The transition marks both continuity and momentum. GC's programs, vendor partnerships, and member support remain stronger than ever, backed by 45 years of experience helping independent stores navigate change and grow profitably.
"What a tremendous, energizing way to start our 2026! GC remains where we form the human connections so important to our business success," said Havlek.
Supporting Both Sides of the Partnership
GC's commitment to the independent channel extends to vendors and retailers equally. Following the member conference, GC hosted a Vendor Forum bringing vendor partners together with GC leadership and the GC Advisory Board for strategic discussions on improving outcomes and strengthening programs across the group.
This two-sided approach is what sets GC apart. By listening to both retailers and vendors, then building programs that serve both, GC has grown membership and vendor participation year over year for more than four decades.
