Bloggers' Choice Awards Presented to Four NY NOW Exhibitors
Posted on 8/26/2013
Four Bloggers’ Choice Awards for exemplary product design were presented to Accent on Design exhibitors at the debut of NY NOW last week.
Four bloggers from noted design and trend-watching sites were each invited to select one product, representing “urgent, odd and delightful design,” from among Accent on Design’s 150-plus exhibitors.
“Design bloggers are on the front line, discovering promising talent and fresh ideas daily,” said Christian Falkenberg, NY NOW director and GLM senior vice president. “We’ve tapped into their up-to-the-minute perspective by inviting them to share their favorites from Accent on Design.” The four bloggers, and the products each identified as the “next big thing,” are:
- Joanne Domeniconi selected The Grommet: Guyot Designs (dba Spruce) from Deer Isle, Maine, for its unbreakable, stemless, silicone wineglass. “Though their design is familiar, their modern materials make them distinctive. Unbreakable, dishwashable and ready for any activity – congratulations to Spruce on a fantastic and beautifully designed innovation in housewares.”
- Marisa Marcantonio selected Stylebeat: Seletti of Brooklyn, N.Y., for its Multidish platter designed by Maxime Ansjau. “Part surrealist, part functional, this artistic reinterpretation takes a classic porcelain motif to a new place. Themes typically associated with classic Netherlands landscapes are turned upside down using the piece to serve its original intended purpose or as a display piece, it amuses while being innovative.”
- Danielle McWilliams selected Design-Calendar: Areaware of Brooklyn, N.Y., for Little Big Trivet. “I just love its simple and smart design. Its dowels are easily adjusted to accommodate everything from a teapot to a large casserole dish. When not in use, it can be hung on a wall as colorful art!”
- Glenn Jackson Taylor selected Core77: MATERIOUS from Chicago, for its Cut Once Heirloom wooden ruler and pen-tray, designed by Stephanie and Bruce Tharp. “At first glance, it appears to be a minimal pen-tray but when turned upside down, the discreet laser-engraved ruler markings are revealed, transforming this simple desktop object into a functional item. Made in the USA, the maple wood ruler is available in five colors and the machine-like retro typography on the ruler side is beautifully executed. It is immediately appealing, whimsical and a clever reinterpretation.”
Accent on Design is presented semiannually at New York’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center as part of NY NOW’s HOME Collection.
