Connecticut Specialty Food Association Hands Out Awards
The Connecticut Specialty Food Association (CSFA) held its 13th Product Awards Competition in March during which 199 specialty food items from Connecticut-based manufacturers were entered in 36 categories.
Apple Pie Jam from Killam & Bassette Farmstead in South Glastonbury, Conn., was named the Food Product of the Year.
A panel of 25 judges consisting of local media personalities, food writers, Connecticut chefs and wine specialists scored products on overall taste/flavor, texture, aroma, and appearance. Each judge was assigned to specific categories, responsible for evaluating an average of 25 different products.

Virginians Anticipate Farm-Fresh Food From 240 Farmers’ Markets
As the demand for Virginia products has increased, so has the number of farmers’ markets in the state. According to VirginiaGrown.com, Virginia has more than 240 farmers’ markets statewide. That’s a 180 percent increase in markets since 2006.
Some are open year-round, while many others open in April or May for seasonal business. Research by Virginia Cooperative Extension has shown that if each household in Virginia spent just $10 a week on locally grown agricultural products, consumers would invest an additional $1.65 billion into the local economy each year.

Mead Industry Reports Explosive Growth
Mead, the alcoholic beverage made from honey, may be the world’s oldest fermented drink, but it is also the country’s hottest. A recent industry survey reveals that mead sales increased 130 percent from 2012 to 2013, exceeding growth rates for beer, wine, distilled spirits and hard cider.
The numbers were released from the annual survey of American Mead Makers Association (AMMA) members. The trade organization represents the U.S. mead industry. NPD: Majority of Grocery Shoppers Will Not Pay More for Non-GMO Products

Report: Specialty Food Sales Break Records
Americans have a growing appetite for specialty food. U.S. sales of specialty food and beverages reached $88.3 billion in 2013, a record high for the fourth year in a row and a jump of 18.4 percent since 2011.
Cheese dominated specialty food sales at retail, with $4 billion in sales in 2013, followed by the categories meat, poultry and seafood; and chips, pretzels and snacks. The fastest-growing categories were nut butters, eggs and frozen desserts, according to new research from the Specialty Food Association.
