The National Consumers League (NCL) has released the testing results of national brands of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) products, finding that – of 11 products sampled – six failed to meet EVOO standards when evaluated by a highly accredited Australian lab. In early January of this year, the consumer group purchased 11 different varieties of olive oil, all labeled extra virgin, from four major Washington area retailers (Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s, Safeway, and Giant). NRDC, Others Petition FDA to Ban Eight Carcinogenic Flavorings in Food
Eight synthetic flavorings – which may be found in ice cream, baked goods, candy and beverages – are known to cause cancer in lab animals, and should be banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a coalition of leading health groups said in a petition filed with the agency today.

Eataly Plans Expansion Into Canada
Eataly, the upscale Italian eatery and foodie shopping destination, is scouting out prominent Toronto locations for its first Canadian restaurants-and-store emporium, according to reports in The Globe and Mail.
Adam Saper, managing partner and chief financial officer at Eataly’s U.S. unit, confirmed to the Toronto newspaper that the company has teamed with Canada’s Weston family business, which owns Canadian luxury chain Holt Renfrew & Co., to help find the best local site.

Dick Taylor Craft Chocolate, a bean-to-bar chocolate bar, celebrated the grand opening of Dick Taylor Craft Chocolate Factory and its Chocolate Boutique in Eureka, Calif., on June 6.
