California Governor Signs Olive Oil Labeling Law
California Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law Senate Bill 65, legislation by Sen. Lois Wolk, D-Solano, changing an outdated labeling law that enabled olive oils to say they were produced in California, or a region of California, according to news reports.
“As California’s olive oil industry continues to grow, it is critical that labels accurately reflect the product consumers are buying,” said Wolk, who chairs the Agriculture Subcommittee on Olive Oil Production and Emerging Products. “If olive oil uses ‘California’ on the label, then 100 percent of the oil must be from olives grown in California. Gourmet Catalog Buying Group Tours Las Vegas Market
Approximately 25 members of the Gourmet Catalog Buying Group (GCBG) recently attended a tour of the Las Vegas market. Retailers and staff visited showrooms of GCBG vendor members, reviewing recent product introductions and making notes for future assortment planning.
Other scheduled events for the group during market included a cocktail reception in the new JURA showroom where retailers were invited to personally test the innovative coffee, tea and espresso makers. Baldor Specialty Foods Plans Distribution Center Expansion
Baldor Specialty Foods, a fresh produce and specialty food distributor, plans to expand its facility by 100,000 square feet at Hunts Point Food Distribution Center in the Bronx, according to Area Development magazine.
The Hunts Point Food Distribution Center is one of the largest in the world and includes the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market, the Hunts Point Cooperative Meat Market and New Fulton Fish Market. Chef Hari Pulapaka of Cress Restaurant, Deland, Fla., was named the winner of the Gold award at the inaugural Farm to Table Chefs Taste Challenge (CTC), which took place Aug. 7, 2015, at the New Orleans Ernest N.
