Gourmet Business October '17

James and I are off to Anuga this week, which is one of the largest food show in the world.  It’s quite amazing to see how the specialty food business has evolved over the years, setting records all the way through.  It seems our food consumers are demanding better quality, artisan made, healthy, and enticing foods to eat.

We have also noticed the emergence of a cocktail culture.  Whiskey is the “in” spirit right now, and rocks and old fashion glass sets are selling like hotcakes.  Restaurant patrons are flocking to bars and restaurants where you find mixologists crafting unique cocktails using homemade ingredients.  Average just doesn’t seem to be in demand anymore.

Make no mistake about it.  The world you are observing is being driven by the influence of the millennials.  They want special.  They crave unique.  They express their individuality through the products they purchase.  They may get by with fewer possessions, but the things they possess do mean something to them.

As we turn our attention to the tableware market this month, you will also notice some changes that reflect the preferences of this younger audience.  Sets have become smaller.  Many don’t want an all-encompassing multi-piece matching set in today’s world.  The influence of the cocktail culture, which does evoke images of post-prohibition America, and the beautiful barware that was produced in the day, is driving a lot of the design you will see as you tour the showrooms.  Even traditional wine glasses are being given a makeover as you can clearly see with the latest introductions from Riedel and LSA International.

As the world changes, so does our merchandise mix in order to remain relevant.  Enjoy your look into the latest tableware products, and notice how the trends reveal themselves.
