Gourmet Business November 2014

Gourmet Business November 2014

As I write this editorial, the leaves on the trees are turning and cascading to the ground, and there is a lovely autumnal chill and scent in the air. We are fully into the fall season, and Thanksgiving and the holiday season will be here in the blink of an eye. While most gourmet retailers have their holiday merchandise, promotions and displays already planned – if not out already – there is always time to add those gift items that customers so often buy on impulse as they browse your stores or are waiting in line at the checkout to pay.

With an eye on holiday gifts that won’t break the bank, the editors of Gourmet Business have curated more than a dozen gift ideas in “Best Bets for the Budget-Minded: Holiday Gifts Under $30,” on page 21. Items include everything from herb planters, a freezable wine carrier and playful wineglasses to limited-edition goat cheese, preserve gift boxes, teaware and cocktail mixers.

And a little something else that you might consider adding to your holiday displays are some unique recently released cookbooks, which editor James Mellgren reviews in his Cookbook Corner Holiday Roundup in this issue on page 35. There are five cookbooks featured this month, including “The Nourished Kitchen: Farm- to-Table Recipes for the Traditional Foods Lifestyle”; “Kitchen Workshop: Pizza, Hands-On Cooking Lessons for Making Amazing Pizza at Home”; “The New Indian Slow Cooker: Recipes for Curries, Dals, Chutneys, Masalas, Biryani, and More”; “Vibrant Food: Celebrating the Ingredients, Recipes, and Colors of Each Season”; and “Scoop Adventures: The Best Ice Cream of the 50 States.”

“Besides being instructional, inspirational or simply fun to read and cook from, I have always believed that cookbooks
sell food and housewares, and food and housewares sell cookbooks,” writes Mellgren. “If merchandised throughout the store, these cookbooks could be a certain recipe for success.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself!
