A Year of Thanks
As 2011 draws to a close, and I recount the year we have had, I am thankful to see that many of the companies in the industries we cover are continuing to flourish. The stagnant economy has had a tremendous impact on a great many people in our country. As demonstrators sleep in parks all across America expressing their discontent, you can't help be reminded that there are still many Americans who desperate to find a job.
In times like these, I think those who are gainfully employed realize how lucky they are. I believe it has caused many people to stop and reflect on what is really important in life above all else. I think that a majority of Americans have determined that it is their personal health and the well-being of their family that matters most, and they are spending their money on products that can enhance their lives in this way. Fortunately for all of us, we are part of an industry that makes products that promote both of these ideals at the same time. There has undoubtedly been a rising interest in cooking at home during 2011. This is fueled, in part, by the much-pronounced cocooning effect. But, another important reason has emerged that was captured in a recent Mintel study, which found that 51 percent of people who cook at home are motivated by a desire for a healthier diet.
My prediction for 2012 is that health and family will emerge as primary motivations for much of the discretionary spending, and they will drive the biggest trends in the year to come. If you look at all of the categories of products that have been experiencing positive sales gains recently, you can probably relate the demand to either of these topics in one way or another. Think of the dramatic rise in the sale of gluten-free food products as Americans seek healthier diets. I could go on and on citing examples. Trust me, it's there. You can't afford to ignore it.
I would like to leave you with a profound message of hope this holiday season as you furiously ring your cash register. When we think about our work, we should realize that we are contributing something important to society. We are not just selling products; we are the champions of a way of life. A way of life that will bring families together as well as bring people happiness, peace of mind, and help them live long, healthy lives.
And with that thought, I would like to extend my best wishes for all of these things to you, too, in 2012 and beyond.
