Glamping is a relatively new term that has been given to describe the trend toward a more comfortable and less Spartan form of camping that is becoming more prevalent in our country. The trend ts into a larger movement found within the travel industry in which the demand for authentic experiences is growing.  Glamping is providing the opportunity for travelers to get closer to nature and appreciate the outdoors while enjoying a reasonable level of amenities and accommodation on terra firma.

I experienced this first had recently as I embarked on a weekend adventure to mountain bike the epic trails in Moab, Utah. As I cycled down the main road, I was passed by a steady stream of the most incredible recreational vehicles, loaded to the nines with every conceivable outdoor toy known to man. Some had trailers in tow pulling motorcycles, ATV, and o -road vehicles of all varieties. Other vehicles were towing cars that were in turn towing a trailer creating a train of outdoor gear that seemed like it could span half a football eld. As we made our way out of town to the trailhead, we passed the incredible campsites where these caravans set up shop, and marveled at the elaborate living complexes that
were assembled.

You can only imagine that much food and drink were part of these camp experiences since the town only has a handful of eating establishments. That is where our industry plays a roll in this story. As summer approaches, and families embark on similar types of vacations, it is going to generate demand for kitchenware and dining products that are portable, less fragile, and attractive. Specialty foods that can simplify preparing meals, while elevating them to another level not easily found in a camp environment will seem like the perfect compliments to the outdoor adventure. Prepared meals that can keep well for multiple days should also seem like attractive alternatives for those planning a longer excursion.

You don’t have to have a camping store to benefit from the demand that is generated from glamping adventures. If you merchandise in such a way as to accentuate the glorified picnic or tailgating type of story, you have already positioned your store to benefit from the outfitting of the upcoming adventures of summer.
