Gourmet Business July 2016

I have always wondered why

Americans are so willing to help and donate their money to improve the lives of people less fortunate in other parts of the world, but when it comes time to decide what product to purchase at the store, will still choose the less expensive product produced with low cost labor in some far o land. The battle cry is often heard to buy American, but it doesn’t seem to sink in that deep with many people. The companies that choose to manufacture their products in America are well aware that they could probably find a less expensive way to produce their products elsewhere, but they also understand doing so would have a negative impact on many. As you have probably noticed in this election year, there seems to be a strong desire by a majority of Americans to improve the business climate in our country. We need to grow employment, and expand manufacturing, among other things, if we have any hope of having a strong economy once again. Buying American products can have a positive impact on our economy at a time when we really need it.

I am not suggesting that anyone should choose to purchase a product that doesn’t meet his or her needs just because it’s made here. But, I think you will find that the products made in America are as good or even better than the average product. And for this reason, these companies deserve to enjoy a slight price premium because they are producing to a higher standard. It’s not always easy to see on the surface, but product design, engineering, manufacturing, and quality control can have a lasting impact on functionality and product lifespan, which can enhance the utility that the customer enjoys from the purchase of the product. Plus, if something does go wrong, and the customer needs product support, they are more likely to receive good service from a domestic company whom they can easily contact to resolve any issues. Perhaps we just need to remind Americans again why buying products from domestic manufacturers makes good sense. Happy Fourth of July.
